How to Reduce Your Wedding's Carbon Footprint
Vows for Tomorrow is a free wedding carbon footprint calculator and
transparent climate wedding registry. Estimate the environmental impact of your wedding,
follow practical steps to reduce it, and invite guests to fund verified carbon removal,
nature restoration, and climate-tech research instead of buying traditional gifts.
The environmental impact of weddings
A wedding's carbon footprint usually ranges from a few tonnes to tens of tonnes of CO₂e.
The biggest drivers are typically guest travel (especially flights) and
catering, followed by accommodation, venue operations, flowers, outfits,
décor, and honeymoon travel. Because every wedding is different, we show a low, central,
and high estimate instead of a single false-precision number.
7 ways to reduce your wedding's carbon footprint
- Estimate your footprint first so you know which categories to target.
- Cut guest travel: choose a venue near most guests, encourage trains, coaches, and carpooling, and avoid flights where possible.
- Choose a lower-meat or plant-based menu with seasonal, local food and minimal waste.
- Pick a sustainable venue and hold the ceremony and reception in one place; keep hotel nights low.
- Rent or reuse outfits, flowers, and décor rather than buying single-use items.
- Rethink the honeymoon — closer destinations or train travel avoid high-emission long-haul flights.
- Fund verified carbon removal and nature restoration for the footprint you can't avoid.
How the Vows for Tomorrow climate registry works
Each guest contribution is split transparently: 50% verified carbon removal
(e.g. biochar and enhanced rock weathering), 25% nature restoration and rewilding,
and 25% climate-tech research and development. Only the verified carbon removal
portion represents quantified carbon removal; the other portions support wider climate-positive
work and are not carbon offsets unless specifically stated. A registry does not automatically
make a wedding carbon neutral.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average carbon footprint of a wedding?
Estimates vary widely — from a few tonnes to tens of tonnes of CO₂e — depending on guest numbers, travel, catering, and venue. Our calculator gives a personalised low–central–high estimate.
How can I reduce my wedding's carbon footprint?
Reduce guest travel, serve a plant-forward menu, choose an efficient venue, rent or reuse outfits and décor, rethink honeymoon flights, and fund verified carbon removal for the rest.
Can a wedding be carbon neutral?
Not automatically. It requires reducing emissions and then purchasing and retiring verified carbon removal equal to the remaining estimated footprint, with documentation.
